Neubie
Neubie by Neufit
The Neubie is a type of direct electrical stimulation device that is not like normal TENS units. TENS units and other types of electrical stimulation use alternating current (AC), the Neubie uses pulsed direct current (DC) to target not only the muscular system but also the nervous system to help your body to heal faster.
When we have pain, our brain sends signals through our nerves to our muscles and joints letting them know that there is a problem. When these signals are steady, this causes the nerves to become more hyperactive which can lead to tightness, spasms, and decreased motion of the muscles and the joints.
Overview
The Neubie is a type of direct electrical stimulation device that is not like normal TENS units. TENS units and other types of electrical stimulation use alternating current (AC), The Neubie uses pulsed direct current (DC) to target not only the muscular system but also the nervous system to help your body to heal faster. The nervous system controls all aspects of our health and performance. Direct current versus alternating current is shown to have benefits that accelerates the natural processes our bodies take to heal and repair, demonstrating more of an effect at the cellular level. With most electrical stimulation units you lay still, but with the Neubie you perform movement to promote proper muscular contraction and joint mobility simultaneously.
When we have pain, our brain sends signals through our nerves to our muscles and joints letting them know that there is a problem. When these signals are steady, this causes the nerves to become more hyperactive which can lead to tightness, spasms, and decreased motion of the muscles and the joints.
Process
The Neubie “mapping” process is utilized in an attempt to find the problem in the nervous system that is the most hyperactive. This indicates the exact point of the problem that is contributing to the pain and impeding recovery. We utilize active movements along with the Neubie to change neurological patterns and re-educate movements that are more normal.
- The red electrode is placed on a large surface area away from the point of mapping such as your shoulder or lower back.
- The black electrode is attached to a sponge and placed on your skin. The intensity is turned up to a goal of 5/10 subjective intensity and then moved around the painful area attempting to find the most intense spots.
- Once one is found, that sponge is replaced with an electrode. The process is then completed with the red electrode until 2 spots are identified that “talk to each other”.
- Once these spots are found the therapist will instruct you on a series of movements and exercises focused on the previously mapped area.
- The goal is to keep the intensity of the machine at the highest level that is tolerated while still being able to perform optimal movements. If your nervous system is functioning at 100% efficiency you should be able to achieve 100hz (and get a free t-shirt!).
Mapping is not the only way that the Neubie can be used. There are also a series of protocols that can be utilized for diagnoses such as back pain, neck pain, ankle pain, and hamstring tightness. The Neubie can also be used on a 5hz setting to decrease swelling. Finally, we also have settings specific for muscle strengthening.
Master Reset
Neubie Master Reset is another specific protocol that can be utilized for treatment of the nervous system. When we have pain our sympathetic nervous system is put into overdrive. The sympathetic nervous system is a branch of the autonomic nervous system that controls our fight or flight response. The purpose of the master reset is to allow the body to “reset” from a sympathetic nervous system stress response state to a parasympathetic relaxation and recovery state. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system it can help to decrease pain levels and allow for full body relaxation. We commonly use the Master Reset for patients with high or chronic pain as well as with individuals with vertigo. The set up is 2 pads are placed on the neck and 2 pads are placed on the bottoms of the feet. The intensity is turned up to a relaxing level and the patient sits or lies still for 10-20 minutes. This is completed in a quiet and dark room to allow for body relaxation with cues to focus on breathing.
Benefits
- Improving or maintaining range of motion
- Completing movements with the Neubie on will help to decrease muscle tightness and improve mobility in the joint.
- Decreasing pain
- By targeting the problems in the nervous system and decreasing hyperactivity, the Neubie will help to decrease pain and tightness in the troubled area.
- Prevention of atrophy
- The Neubie can be utilized for strengthening which can decrease muscular atrophy.
- Increased local blood circulation
- Immediate post surgical stimulation to prevent blood clots
- The Neubie can be used on the ankle or foot with ankle pumps to decrease risk of blood clots when sedentary. The swelling setting can also be utilized to decrease this risk.
- Relaxation of muscle spasms
- Mapping and light frequency can be used for muscle spasms to relax and decrease motion. There is also a setting called Master Reset that can be used to “restart” the nervous system and lead to full body relaxation.
Contraindications
The Neubie cannot be utilized with the following:
- Cardiac pacemaker or other implanted medical devices (some spinal stimulators can be turned off or to MRI mode to utilize the Neubie)
- Malignancy in the area to be treated
- Pregnant women
